The Approved Code of Practice for the Control of Legionella Bacteria in Water Systems (L8) from the HSE recommends the following routine monitoring and maintenance regime:
 
+ Hot & cold water temperatures at sentinel outlets should be checked monthly
+ Hot & cold water temperatures at all other outlets should be checked yearly
+ Showerheads should be dismantled, de-scaled, cleaned and disinfected quarterly
+ Cold water storage tank water temperatures should be checked every six months
+ Cold water storage tanks should be checked internally yearly
+ Cold water storage tanks should be de-scaled, cleaned & disinfected when required
+ Calorifier & water heater flow & return temperatures should be checked monthly
+ Calorifier blowdown and/or internal condition should be checked yearly
+ Calorifiers should be de-scaled, cleaned and disinfected when required
+ Irregularly used outlets should be flushed weekly
 
Suitable records of all checks, results & remedial actions should be maintained for five years.
In order to ensure safety and prevent the colonisation of your water system by legionella or other bacteria, water temperatures should be maintained as follows:
 
+ Water should leave calorifiers / heaters above 60ºC
+ Water should return to calorifiers / heaters above 50ºC
+ Water at hot outlets should reach 50ºC within 1 minute
+ Hot water at handwash basins, showers, etc. should be below
    43ºC, by use of thermostatic mixing valves located nearby
+ Water at cold outlets should be below 20ºC within 2 minutes
+ Point-of-use water heaters can be set to any temperature,
    providing they are regularly used & scalding is avoided
