Asbestos containing materials (ACM) can be HIGHLY HAZARDOUS if cut, sanded, sawn, drilled,
broken or removed without appropriate precautions. Protect Health & Safety Limited offer free advice regarding asbestos handling and can arrange licensed asbestos removal if required.
Some tasks involving lower risk ACM are classed as 'Non-licensable' and can be completed by a competent person, who has received suitable training.
Authorities may still need to be notified and the complete task should last no more than one hour in any consecutive seven day period (two hours if a team is involved). Suitable precautions should be taken, including:
1. Wear a dust mask approved for use with asbestos and a disposable overall
2. Wet the material with a mixture of water and washing-up liquid (avoiding any electrical parts)
3. Remove material whole (or in the largest pieces possible)
4. Double bag in sealed, strong plastic bags, with an official label; 'Warning - Contains Asbestos'
5. Clear all dust and debris with a damp cloth, then pack all waste, cloths and overalls as above
6. Do NOT use a vacuum cleaner unless it is of a type which is approved for use with asbestos dust
7. Contact your local council or a licensed waste contractor to arrange disposal
